What is LASIK?

The eye and vision defects

The cornea is a part of the eye that light can be concentrated to create an image on the retina. It works the same way that the lens of a camera focuses light to create an image on film. The bending and focusing of light is also known as refraction. In general, the shape of the cornea of the eye are not perfect and the image on the retina is out-of-will be the focus (blurred) or distorted. These gaps in the focus of the eye are called refractive errors. There are three main types of refractive errors: myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

People with nearsightedness or farsightedness, have more difficulty, since distant objects as clearly as near objects. Persons with hyperopia, or farsightedness, have more difficulty because of proximity as clearly as distant objects. Astigmatism is caused by the distortion of images on the retina by irregularities in the cornea and lens of the eye. Combinations of myopia and astigmatism and farsightedness and astigmatism are common. Glasses or contact lenses are designed to compensate for the shortcomings of the eyes. Surgical procedures to improve the focus of the eye are treated as refractive surgery.

In LASIK, the rimozione precisa della cornea e controllata forma con un laser corneal speciale della cambiando il suo potere di Messa a fuoco.

Other types of refractive surgery

Used radial keratotomy and photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, RK or other refractive surgery to reshape the cornea. In RK incisions was a sharp knife cut in the cornea changing its shape. PRK was the first surgical procedure developed to reshape the cornea, by sculpting, using a laser. Later, LASIK was developed. The same type of laser used for LASIK and PRK. Often lasers are exactly the same as those for the two types of operations. The main difference between the two operations is how the stroma, the middle layer of the cornea exposed before it is vaporized with the laser. In PRK, the top layer of the cornea, the epithelium, is scraped off to expose the stromal layer below. LASIK to cut a flap in the stromal layer and fold the flap.

Another type of refractive surgery is thermokeratoplasty in which heat is used to reshape the cornea. The heat source is a laser, but it is used another type of laser, such as LASIK and PRK. Other devices refractive corneal ring segments that are inserted into the stroma and special contact lenses that temporarily alter the cornea (orthokeratology).

What the FDA

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA sale of medical devices such as lasers for LASIK controls) used. Before a medical device can be legally in the United States, the person or company must sell the unit, is seeking FDA approval to be sold. To obtain approval, you must demonstrate that the device is relatively safe and effective in Parliament for a particular purpose, with “.” Once the FDA has issued a medical license, the doctor may decide to use the device for other indications if the doctor believes it is in the best interest of the patient. Using a screening device approved for multiple FDA-approved indication is “off-label use”. The FDA does not regulate the practice of medicine.

The FDA has no authority to:

Regulate a doctor’s office. In other words, do not tell doctors what the FDA if their activities or what may or not say to their patients.
Put the amount you can make a doctor for LASIK free.
It was “the existence” of the package insert for laser potential patients available.
Recommendations for physicians, clinics, centers, or eyes. The FDA does not need to carry or have access to this list of LASIK doctors.

Code of conduct or a rating system for each medical products is regulated.

The system first refractive laser approved by the excimer laser FDA for use in PRK to treat myopia and astigmatism are discussed below. However, doctors began using these lasers for LASIK (PRK and others) and other refractive errors (not just the treatment of myopia) A. In recent years, LASIK surgery is shorter for medical treatment in the United States. Recently, several laser manufacturers to FDA approval for laser systems for LASIK for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism and for PRK treatment hyperopia and astigmatism gained for treatment.

See the section on lasers approved by the FDA for more information on the laser to receive FDA approval and were given specific information and treatment intervals, for which they are admitted.
